The Mikado

£75.00

Created for Imaginary Menagerie – an exhibition of ‘typographic explorations of tongue twisters and unpronounceable phrases’ – this print is based on Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado, a comic opera set in Japan. It is taken from a song contemplating the sensation of a ‘short, sharp shock’ (caused by being beheaded).

The typesetting references the Japanese writing system by reading from top to bottom and the offset overprinted colours have a likeness to Tokyo’s famous neon lights, like those found in Yasukuni Dori, Shinjuku. This print was originally exhibited as part of the Bloomsbury Festival and the Typo London conference.
